Celebrating Carers in South Gloucestershire

March 2013

Celebrating Carers is an event celebrating and supporting all carers in South Gloucestershire.

If you look after or help a relative, partner, friend or neighbour, you are one of our 24,000 adult, parent and young carers.

We recognise the huge contribution made by every one of our carers and the need to make sure you have the right support and information to assist you in your role.

  • meet other carers and find out what support is available to you
  • get advice on balancing your caring responsibilities and your life outside caring
  • celebrate the diversity of carers and their situations
  • find out more about the support groups across South Gloucestershire
  • have fun and share your views and experiences.

See event details below.

To book: go to www.southglos.gov.uk/celebrating carers, email your name and contact details to cchengagement@southglos.gov.uk or phone 01454 862356.  Entry is free.

Chief Executive to chair Bristol Housing Partnership

March 2013

Elim’s chief executive, Alistair Allender, has been elected to chair the Bristol Housing Partnership (BHP) when the current chair stands down later this year.

The BHP comprises all the housing associations operating in Bristol and the City Council landlord service. It is an active group which co-ordinates activity, plans development and undertakes one-off projects.

The BHP is currently sponsoring the Bristol Housing Futures project looking at private renting in the City and how associations can contribute.

Commenting on his appointment, Alistair Allender said: “We are in a period of great change and I look forward to working in my role as chair to ensure that the BHP improves the housing supply in the City through joint working”.

Red Nose Day fundraising at The Forecastle

March 2013

Six tenants from The Forecastle, Elim’s supported housing scheme in South Gloucestershire, along with staff and Rob, the new volunteer at the scheme, worked hard to raise over £150 for the Red Nose Day Appeal last Friday.

Tenants, John Olive and Chris Taylor, took on the challenge of a sponsored head shave, and the rest of the Red Nose Day team braved the wet and windy weather to hold a car wash, which was supported by the tenants and neighbours of the supported housing scheme along with staff from Elim Head office.

The total amount of money raised is enough to: buy five Braille kits, train a worker to provide support to an elderly isolated person, or pay for twenty three children in Uganda to be tested for Malaria, so they get much needed treatment.

Congratulations to the team at The Forecastle on their great effort!

Shared ownership week 2013

March 2013

The average cost of a home in the South West is 11.5 times the average local wage and private sector rents are expected to rise by 62% in the next decade.  Shared ownership is an antidote to many of the challenges of the housing market in particular those of first time buyers.

You can find more information about the challenges of getting on the housing ladder and the role of shared ownership as a solution to these in the NHF: Shared Ownership - Meeting Aspiration [pdf] 652KB booklet.

Elim currently owns and manages shared ownership homes in the Bristol area.  We are not developing new homes at the moment but you can find details of properties of new build and resale properties available across the South West on the South West Homes website.
