Taylor House residents in football tournament

Football team

July 2012

On 20th June, staff and residents from Taylor House in Gloucester took part in a six-a-side football tournament with 11 other local housing providers and agencies in support of National Supported Housing Month. Although Taylor House did not make it to the final they did finish with a respectable record of winning two and drawing one from five games. The day was very enjoyable and gave a chance to meet residents and staff from other local organisations. The Mayor Of Gloucester David Brown presented trophies to the winning team.

Resident receives award for bravery

Barnwood resident award for bravery

July 2012

The Heart of Gloucestershire Community Awards recognise community heroes who help others.  Mr Stephen Load, an Elim resident from Gloucester, recently received the Brave Heart Hero award for his bravery in helping a neighbour escape a fire in her property in Manor Gardens Gloucester.

Mr Load dragged his neighbour from her home after hearing her shouts for help.

Mr Load explains “I opened my front door to see thick black smoke coming out from her door.  I tried to open it but couldn’t as it was locked.”  After several unsuccessful attempts to get into his neighbours property, and seeing that the front room was ablaze, Mr Load smashed the glass in the front door to enter the property: “All I could see were flames shooting across the front room and choking black smoke everywhere.  She was on the floor so I had to drag her out of the flat.”

Mr Load showed exceptional bravery in his actions and we would like to congratulate him on his award.

We are pleased to report that no resident was seriously injured and that Elim staff on site reacted quickly, going above the call of duty, to reassure residents and ensure their safety.  We are working with the insurers to get the properties repaired as quickly as possible and those residents affected have been found alternative accommodation.

Whilst we commend Mr Load for his actions on this occasion, residents should not risk their own safety to go into a burning building.  Instead call the Fire Brigade on 999 and wait for them to arrive.

There are some simple steps you can take to keep you, your family and home safe.  You can find more information on our fire safety page.  This page also has contacts for your local Fire Service who will be able to give you further support and advice.
