Starts at Home Day 2025

Starts at Home Day is an opportunity to celebrate the vital role that supported housing plays in communities across the country. It highlights the need for supported housing to be fully recognised as an essential component of our housing, health, social care, and criminal justice systems.

Without a long term strategy, thousands of people risk losing access to the support they need, placing pressure on public services and leaving individuals who could otherwise live independently facing the risk of homelessness.

Recently, we met with three residents, Baahir, Kyle and Robyn. They told us how supported housing has provided them with a safe and secure place to call home, helping them to feel empowered to live happier and healthier lives.

Baahir’s story

Baahir arrived in the UK as a refugee from Eritrea, East Africa, and initially faced homelessness, living in temporary accommodation that was unsuitable. After being referred to Elim by Gloucester City Council, he was able to secure a safe and stable place to live in an Elim shared house. This marked the first time he could truly settle down, attend college for digital marketing and ESOL English, make new friends, and build a fresh start for himself.

Baahir said: “Supported housing has allowed me to focus on my next steps without worrying about where I’m going to be sleeping next week. I’m finally able to start a career, I want to be skilled and I’m working hard towards this goal. Without suitable supported housing, this would not have been possible.”

Kyle’s story

After experiencing a family bereavement, Kyle spent several years rough sleeping before being referred to us by South Gloucestershire Council. Since moving into ‘The Forecastle’ supported housing scheme, he has been able to develop a clear and realistic plan for his future with the guidance of his support worker.

Kyle said: “Honestly, I don’t know where I’d be today without the support from the Forecastle team. Their patience and understanding during our sessions have made a big difference, and there’s a real sense of community here that I didn’t expect. For the first time in a long while, I feel clear-headed and confident in my ability to achieve the goals I’ve set for myself.”

Robyn’s story

Robyn's journey highlights the crucial role of supported housing in transforming lives. Robyn’s pathway through Elim began at our Taylor House supported housing scheme after experiencing rough sleeping, she has since moved through this service and now lives independently in a shared house.

Robyn has shown incredible determination, pursuing a hairdressing course at Gloucester College and volunteering at a local community meal service. Her progress is a testament to the positive impact supported housing can have on individuals, and she’s since been nominated for a gold band for housing, marking the next step in her journey toward stability and independence.

Robyn said: “Regardless of the challenges I faced, my support worker remained by my side, always encouraging me to pursue my goals. Living in supported housing gave me the stability I needed, and when the time came to transition to my bedsit and independent living, the process felt smooth, and I felt prepared and safe.”
